Doubling up in Sydney
Designed by SAOTA and set in a north-facing cove in Sydney’s vast natural harbour, the site borders a park and a public pier which juts out into the bay. This element forms one axis for the site whilst a pristine beach, directly
in front of the site, forms another. From the principle park elevation that the new building appears
as a collection of planes; a play on space, privacy and threshold. Graphite grey sail screens (made from “Kaynemaile,” a polycarbonate chainmail developed in New Zealand for the Lord of the Rings movies) are rigged just off the house providing privacy from the road. Timber cladding, plastered mass walls, a wood-clad soffit and the exaggerated cill of a bay window punched through the sail screens, are layered into further planes. This game creates depth in an otherwise linear façade and provides privacy whilst maximising light and views to the park. Set into this façade the stairwell is fully glazed; but wrapped protectively in a cloak of timber louvres. This gently curved outline contrasts with the surrounding crystalline box and mediates between the formal entrance and bedrooms above... read more

Walking on air...
When it comes to architectural challenges, they don’t come much tougher than building a glass walkway on top of The Rock of Gibraltar. Limited access, plunging cliffs, changing weather systems and tailless Barbary Macaques were just some of the difficulties encountered when designing and constructing Skywalk. Skywalk is a state-of-the-art glass platform and walkway built above an historic military platform once serving as a base for anti-aircraft Bofors guns. It offers breath-taking, 360-degree panoramic views across Europe and Africa, the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean, as well as the plunging cliffs below. The design brief was simple; afford the visitor with new and unrivalled views in all directions including the rocky cliff face. At the same time, we had to ensure a subtle intervention that did not detract from the natural and historic nature of what is a very unique setting. To deliver on this brief, the architects teamed up with architectural studios Mayice, who helped come up with the original concept designs. Together, they designed a cantilevered walkway with glazed flooring and balustrade that wrapped around the historic stone platform. Steel stairs gave access to the military platform below where the old octagonal concrete gun base would serve as a seat for visitors to rest and gaze out towards the distant horizon. The construction challenges faced with Skywalk were many. Access was limited to the very narrow roads that zig-zag their way up the Rock. This meant the structure of the walkway... read more

The proposal from C.F. Møller Architects for a new station in Hamburg looks to act as a visionary landmark and an urban catalyst, both for the northern district of Altona’s development and the wider city. By interlinking nature and city life, the new station plays a role in contributing to the city’s vision of consolidating and giving significance to its green spaces Conceptually, the project is a compilation of three primary elements: a base, a roofscape and two towers. The base gathers the project's public and urban attributes, while the two towers accommodate a hotel and office spaces with views of Hamburg. An undulating roof landscape binds these two elements together and looks to offer a softer and inviting quality to the proposal... read more
