Zaha Hadid Architects head for the Black Sea
Located on the Black Sea coast, connecting Russia with the Mediterranean, Atlantic Ocean and Suez Canal, the city of Novorossiysk is the nation’s largest shipping port and the third busiest in Europe by
turnover. With direct links to Russia’s rail and highway networks, Novorossiysk has also developed
into an important centre of industry. Documented in antiquity as a port specializing in grain, Novorossiysk rich history and traditions as a centre of trade are continued in this masterplan by Zaha Hadid Architects that integrates new public spaces and amenities for the city’s residents and visitors to enjoy the seashore with facilities to host international conferences, trade fairs and business congresses, as well as professional and academic seminars. With its buildings orientated perpendicular to the sea front to maintain existing sea views from the city, the masterplan is interwoven with Novorossiysk’s urban fabric in a porous configuration that reconnects the city with its coast, inviting residents and visitors to traverse the site via public plazas, gardens and parks. By restricting vehicular access, the design... read more

1 Hamonic+Masson find diversity in unity
In the history of architecture it is rare to find examples where all the buildings on a particular road are built entirely by the same architect. During the buzz of Ré-inventer Paris, Inventons la Métropole and other international architecture competitions, the Camille Claudel project primarily poses the question of scale. The trauma of the Grands Ensembles has prevented a unitary approach in architecture today. We often see urban... read more

5 Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s ‘masterwork’
As Charles Rennie Mackintosh's home city of Glasgow celebrates the anniversary of his birth, his work could not be more popular, with his face and his trademark motifs adorning everything from dishcloths and carrier bags to coffee cups. He is now the epitome of Glasgow Style but he died 90 years ago in poverty-stricken obscurity after a career that ground to a halt in his early 40s. He was not widely recognised at home and was... read more

New images of V&A Dundee revealed
A photographic exhibition of V&A Dundee will be presented by Kengo Kuma and Associates, in collaboration with Architects, during the 2018 Venice Biennale. This will be held from May 26 to November 25 in Palazzo Bembo, Riva del Carbon, beside the Rialto Bridge on the Grand Canal in Venice. The exhibition is part of Time Space Existence, organised by the European Cultural Centre with the support of the GAA Foundation. Kengo Kuma, architect of V&A Dundee, said: “My inspiration always starts from the place where the project will be. In the past, I have visited Scotland many times. It is a very beautiful country and I’m truly in love with the Scottish landscape and nature. “When we started this competition, the first thing I wanted to do was visit the site. I always want to do this. I would be too scared otherwise. After all, certain things can be felt there and nowhere else. “The uniqueness of this project for us is in the position between the water and the city – it is very different from a normal site as it sits in between land and water. As we started thinking about the project one of my colleagues showed me a picture of the cliffs of north-eastern Scotland – it’s as if the earth and water had a long conversation and finally created this stunning shape. “The design of V&A Dundee attempts to translate this geographical uniqueness into the building by creating an artificial cliff. “The big idea for V&A Dundee was bringing together nature and architecture, and to create a new living room for the city... read more
