Our featured architect this month is Katy Marks. Founder of Citizens
Design Bureau, mother of two small boys, and winner of many accolades including the World Interiors News Awards Bars and Leisure or Entertainment categories in 2015. Marks is currently busy working on a vast range of projects from community housing projects, workspace schemes and a number of theatre and arts buildings, so we were delighted that she found the time to talk to us about some of her many projects, her passion for environment and social justice and The HUB, a collective of businesses based in Islington.
Elsewhere in the issue we feature the best of hospitality design to celebrate the launch of our hospitality categories which include; Hotels, Bars, Restaurants and, new for this year, Café interiors.
We’ve assembled some of the biggest names in the industry to judge each category, all of which are committed to promoting creative excellence within this sector, including David Loewi, Managing Director of D & D London, whose many hotels and restaurants include the sophisticated South Place, the infamous Bluebird, and the vast German Gymnasium. We also have Charlie North, Director of Design at Ennismore, a London based owner and developer of unique hospitality properties including the Hoxton hotels which are currently in the midst of a global expansion, as well as several new standalone restaurant concepts.
Discounted entry to the hospitality categories ends 1st April so whatever your project, from elegant to edgy, we'd love to hear from you!

HOTEL PROJECT: ATHENSWAS EPILOGI KTIRION-K.BENAKOPOULOS & STAGE DESIGN OFFICE AthensWas is an homage to possibly the best architectural renaissance in Athens—classic modernism, which lent itself well to the available materials in the region, such as marble and walnut. The hotel’s structure, which was built in 2006 as an apartment building, allows for spacious and homey guestrooms with large balconies—a rare luxury in this cradle of western civilization... RESTAURANT PROJECT: CASSIA MONTALBA ARCHITECTS Located at the corner of 7th Street and Arizona Avenue in Santa Monica, CA, this 4,800 sf first floor restaurant renovation includes 900 sf of outdoor dining space. Built in 1937, the existing Art Deco building retains a unique aesthetic history and character that inspired the designers' approach toward the space. With minimal refinishing, the original raw concrete structure was left exposed on the ceiling, walls and floors... READ MORE HERE
HOTEL PROJECT: G-ROUGH EMANUELE GAROSCI & GABRIELE SALINI The façade even has an original Latin inscription, “SATIS AMPLA QVAE SECVRITATE RIDEAT”, meaning big enough to give a feeling of security. More than just comfort, G-Rough is a pastiche with original wooden ceilings, patina walls, and meandering floor plans typical of Roman apartments. Here in the living room of the Piazza Pasquino suite, classic 1950s furniture abound such as the octagonal coffee table, velvet aubergine chair, floor lamp with blown glass, and cascade light. Indulgence at G-Rough... READ MORE HERE

HOTEL PROJECT: LES BAINS TRISTAN AUER AND DENIS MONTELI The building that houses Les Bains is a Haussmannian masterpiece. Thus prize-winning architect Vincent Bastie used his vast experience and deep respect for the structure’s creative roots to reinvent space in a daring way. His was a radical reconfiguring of the building that amplified its volumes, while respecting its history and its grand façade. At Les Bains, a bar is as much a social and creative gathering place as it is a brilliant display... READ MORE HERE
RESTAURANT PROJECT: LA BUVETTE ENOKI The design intent of La Buvette was to create a little piece of France in the city of Adelaide. Owner Dom hails from France and together with Australian born wife Hayley, they came to Enoki with the brief to create an authentic French wine bar and charcuterie. The budget was tight and the building historically beautiful, although run down. The existing space required extensive works to bring it up to code and operation... READ MORE HERE
HOTEL PROJECT: NOVOTEL LOUNGE STUDIO CONSTANCE GUISSET Accor asked us to design a new concept of public areas for Suite Novotel, adapted to a more and more independent host. The brief also gave us guidelines, which can be summed up in two phrases:
RESTAURANT PROJECT: MR HOLMES BAKEHOUSE - ARON TZINAS - For the baked goods box, the idea was simple: make everyone who bought or received baked goods from Mr Holmes feel special. We wanted our packaging to represent the quality that was inside. Too often you see bakeries just stamp a plain craft paper box, and even though we know this was the (much) more expensive option, we knew that we wanted it to feel like you were receiving a birthday present... RESTAURANT PROJECT: OSTERIA SAVIO VOLPE - STE. MARIE DESIGN - Savio Volpe is a restaurant styled after the classic osteria – rustic fare in the Italian tradition of freshness and regionality, using groceries gathered in the nearby lakes, oceans, farms and fields. Everything is prepared in the simplest, most flavourful way; pasta is handmade fresh every day – fatto a mano in casa – meat, poultry and fish are kissed by smoke over the wood-fired grill...
