WIN AWARDS 16, RESIDENTIAL ISSUE INSIDE 72
Welcome
It began over omelette and chips.
When I first raised the idea of launching two new Practice categories to
honour design practices based on their portfolio of work with Scottish
architect, Jenny Jones, over this humble repast at Shoreditch House in
London’s East End, she immediately ‘got it’. Not only did she offer her
expertise in helping to set the most pertinent criteria, but also her time
as a judge.
‘I am honoured to be involved with this Award. As both a
practitioner and an educator, I know the focus and many
talents required to create great projects and am delighted
to be part of the jury that will award recognition for this.’
JENNY JONES RIBA
FOUNDER – STUDIO JENNY JONES
Since then our ‘omelette exchanges’ have become a regular chance for us to
catch up and share ideas. And I couldn’t have asked for a better collaborator:
not only is Jenny fiercely committed to helping emerging designers to do just
that, her experience is exceptional…
During the 90s she worked for Rogers Stirk Harbour and then for OMA in
Rotterdam. After returning to the UK, Jenny taught at the Architectural
Association and Edinburgh School of Architecture. She went on to work at
HMKM and Barber and Osgerby’s UniversalDesignStudio and, most recently
for Sir Terence Conran as Design and Board Director. Alongside her own
practice, Studio Jenny Jones, Jenny is a visiting lecturer at the RCA on the
Interior Design Programme.
Recently, Jenny spoke to me about re-purposing the interior of a relatively
small ‘loft’ of 62 sq. m in a former East London factory. The existing
topsy-turvy layout has since been transformed into the freed-up, light and
functional space it was always meant to be: proving that small really can be
beautiful. Read Jenny’s personal account of how this was achieved below…
Take a look at just a few of the Practices that have already entered in this issue
of INSIDE. If you are interested in entering, the Interior Practice of
the Year and Emerging Interior Practice of the Year categories are
open until 30 September 2016.

NO.5 LOFT
BY STUDIO JENNY JONES
The redevelopement of this loft focused on
compressing enclosed functions so that the open
functions could enjoy the “free-ed volume”. It was
found with a late 90's developer fit-out that I suspect
had been designed at 1:200 and was laid out as a
studio with an enclosed kitchen and large bathroom.
The developer converted around 60 apartments.…
