QE2 Hotel Design Proposal by Benoy

Almost 50 years on from the launch of The QE2, design proposals are being put forward for the ship’s conversion into a floating 5-star hotel. Amongst the proposed plans is the scheme of award-winning designers Benoy, who propose a design preserving the original architecture and ambience of the world-famous vessel, uniting the character of the 60s with contemporary and cutting edge design trends. It is a scheme which propels the liner into the 21st century luxury market.

In the historically important spaces of the Midships Lobby and Queen’s Room, Benoy propose to conserve the forward-thinking intent of the original QE2 design by introducing modern variations on textiles, lighting, fittings and technology. 

Amongst the design challenges encountered during the early stages of planning was the issue of how to introduce light and physical space into the arteries of the ship, given the long, straight passenger corridors which run through the vessel. Benoy’s solution was to carve circular vestibules out along the passageways, providing opportunities to showcase art and feature lighting to open the space up.

Within the guest suites, the curved alterations of the corridors continue to flow through the spatial design, with subtle hints of a nautical theme. The luxurious ambience was crafted using highlights of marbled stone, stand-alone bath tubs and glass walls. The furnishings note the style of the QE2 history, with a vintage appeal that is accompanied by a natural and contemporary colour palette. 

The floating hotel will accommodate private residences, a conference centre, a performance theatre and ballroom, as well as retail and leisure locations. Benoy has accommodated space for a modern maritime museum, present the important and fascinating history and artefacts of the iconic vessel to both the public and hotel guests. Guests can experience an elevator ride to the top of the ship’s funnel, which has been re-designed as an observation platform. Above deck, the original swimming pool has been enlarged to accommodate 5-star standards.

John Denton, Director of Interior Design at Benoy, commented that the firm’s submission embraced the “history and philosophy” of the transatlantic ocean liner.

Conran on Cloud Nine

Visitors to the prestigious Independent Hotel Show in London over the past two days have been treated to an unusual experience by the creative team at Conran and Partners, whose thought-provoking installation welcomed visitors into a VIP area like no other: Cloud Nine.

The concept was to provide an area in which to experience a “feet on the ground, head in the clouds” sensation. Conran and Partners’ creative director of brand and product, Massimo Acanfora, explains that Conran on Cloud Nine symbolises “creative agility” which inspires “infinite thoughts and forms.”

Located in the VIP area at Olympia West Hall, it was intended as a space where people could meet during the show which would encourage creative thinking and discussion of approaches towards design.

To bring the concept to life, one million metres of string, cut into differing lengths, were suspended from the ceiling, giving curious visitors the sense of their heads being submerged in the clouds, an experience which Acanfora believes is key when it comes to creative exploration: “Everyone loves clouds. We always like to have our head in the cloud and feet on the ground when we are creative.”

In keeping with the show’s commitment to outstanding design, Conran on Cloud Nine served as a memorable talking point for the thousands of high profile guests passing through the event.

 

The New Face of Student Living?

Could iQ Shoreditch be the future of student accommodation? Showcasing a pioneering design, this unique residential project offers students a living space like no other academic housing in the capital. “We are setting a new baseline for quality student accommodation within central London,” said developer James Crow of Quintain.

Designed by author and television presenter Naomi Cleaver, the project exhibits details which are creative and forward-thinking, giving the halls of residence a distinct edge over its counterparts. “My strategy was to reflect the famously vibrant character of Shoreditch – already a mecca for young people – as well as creating a comforting sense of home for a diverse community of students from across the world,” said Cleaver. “Student accommodation is as much an expression of home as anywhere else but much of the student accommodation I had researched looked corporate to me. While security and efficiency are important, so is nurture and play.”

Drawing on the context of the surrounding urban environment was a key aspect of this creation; young artists and designers were commissioned to realise the design concept, which aimed to represent the “visual anarchy” found in the locality, to reflect Tonkin Liu’s local pavementscape and to appeal to a broad spectrum of students.

In addition to individual bedrooms, iQ Shoreditch features 24 quirky common rooms and public spaces, each demonstrating imaginative, innovative design.  From the stuffed deer in The Conservatory to the iconic film posters in the TV lounges, the varied designs reflect the youthful, artistic vibrancy synonymous with the area. In the reception area circular leather seating surrounds a large tree, which acts as an unusual feature and compliments the motifs in the adjacent courtyard, designed by architect Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands.  In The Sky Lounge, an installation of copper rods spans the ceiling, mapping and identifying the stars, whilst string art forms a 24-hour time-lapse depiction of London’s flight path.

To encompass the varying practical needs of the students, Cleaver’s design extends beyond conventional study rooms to include a music practice room and an art room, where pinboards line the walls and large tables provide a crucial workspace for art, fashion and design students.

Placing high importance on local manufacture and resourcefulness, Cleaver used reclaimed chairs and desks adorned with ripe graffiti to furnish study rooms, and papered their walls with misprinted sheets of Shakespearean plays.

For students living their academic lives against the backdrop of this ambitious design project, their visual landscape is multifaceted. To wander through the rooms of iQ Shoreditch is to experience the many faces of the accommodation; in one room the colour tones, furnishings and features cultivate a homely, welcoming feel whilst the contemporary lighting, interior accessories and wall art in another exude as much edgy character as the borough of Shoreditch itself.

Antonio Aricò: ‘Still Alive’ for Seletti

Antonio Aricò’s new collection ‘Still Alive’ deals with the artistic and timeless theme of the ‘Still Life’. For this collection, specially designed for Seletti, Antonio wanted to play with inanimate objects and natural shapes usually put together by famous and amateur painters.

‘Still Alive’, a ‘practical and organized piece of art’, comes from Stefano Seletti’s desire to work on wooden boxes that can be used for storage. Antonio decided to use a “graceful detournement” and he wonderfully moved objects from one context to another by simply transforming common products and their uses to create new stories and feelings – always referring to pure and simple emotions.

The result? An arrangement and combination of elements that you can use and play with. By juxtaposing their various shapes and shadows, the user receives a daily invitation to discover and explore them in a creative way. The design set includes a tall wooden pitcher, which can be used to
hold rulers or scissors, a wooden vase which is divided into three parts for storing items like tacks and paperclips, a practical cup made of brass which can be used as a pen holder, a wooden pencil box to hide your precious, favourite pens, a porcelain bottle which can be seen as a simple mono vase to put a smiling flower in, a wooden pyramid-shaped box in emerald green with a retro “radica” effect to put your personal treasures in, and a magical magnifying glass sphere to help you read the passionate letters of your lover.

All of these elements are highly functional, so ‘Still Alive’ will become part of your daily routine – ready to be used at your desk or living room table. Sensorial, tactile, and dynamic, every piece has its own carved-out place on a polygonal wooden base and you’ll have the freedom and pleasure to move them around, tidying up or playing with all of their functions and materials.

Already featured in Seletti’s catalogue, ‘Still Alive’ will be presented for the first time in Maison et Objet from the 24 – 28 January.

SieMatic opens flagship showroom in Mayfair, London with Nicholas Anthony

Last week World Interiors News attended the opening of the new luxury Mayfair showroom by German kitchen manufacturer SieMatic. The Nicholas Anthony showroom has been chosen to become the flagship showroom for the SieMatic network based on Wigmore Street, and will celebrate its dedicated new SieMatic displays and role.

Following on from the successful BeauxArts kitchen furniture range by SieMatic, BeauxArts.02 the concept utilises Sterling Grey SE2002 doors with polished nickel handles and S2 doors in a rich Ebony Walnut finish with the recessed grip slot in polished nickel. SieMatic explain, “It reveals how it’s possible to create a living and dining space even in the compact spaces common in city homes.”

The design of BeauxArts.02 is purposefully segmented; the cooking area is separated from the cleaning or preparation areas and depending on the segment, different materials, handles and dimensions are used for fronts and surfaces. This gives the kitchen the diversity of styles reflective of the BeauxArts architectural style, upon which the design concept is based.

FloatingSpaces

This innovative design feature concentrates on the kitchen as the hub of the home and welcomes the notion of this room as an open-plan living space. FloatingSpaces is made up of a panel system and highly functional open shelves with customisable finishes such as natural woods, which include matt or gloss lacquer and high-quality laminate. The launch event brought together the wider SieMatic family with guest appearances from SieMatic’s CEO Ulrich Siekmann, Export Director Roy Oldfield, Architect Marc Sporer and world renowned designer and co-creator of the BeauxArts.02 kitchen, Mick De Giulio. Guests enjoyed fine wine, canapés, music from a jazz duo and cookery demonstrations from appliance specialist Gaggenau.

LimeWharf hosts Adhocracy: exhibition explores how new methods of production are stimulating a “cultural revolution”

Opening to the public on 4 September, Adhocracy@LimeWharf brings some of the freshest thinking on the future of design and fabrication to the heart of London’s creative quarter in Hackney. LimeWharf is a cultural innovation gallery and artistic laboratory situated on Vyner Street, Regent’s Canal, at the heart of East London. This innovative and experimental centre welcomes artists and scientists to collaborate in residencies, think-tank gatherings and stimulating exhibitions.

Adhocracy@LimeWharf is curated by Joseph Grima, and adapted for London by urban designer and curator/architect of the Limewharf.org  gallery, Thomas Ermacora. The exhibition is a tour de force in speculative thinking about our future, positioning open design and distributed manufacturing as new engines for unprecedented networks of creation and problem-solving around the world. The exhibition brings together an international group of pioneers representing the avant-garde of digital fabrication ecologies that respond to changes around us, questioning the very definition of design.

Limewharf Exterior

Originally conceived by Grima for the first Istanbul Design Biennial in October 2012, the exhibition then travelled to the New Museum in New York City in May 2013. The London iteration is adapted specifically for LimeWharf, and promises an exhibition that challenges the individual to participate in a global conversation on the role of new designer-maker paradigms, providing a fascinating experience for newcomers and experts alike.

Grima explains the exhibition:
“Adhocracy argues that rather than the closed object, the maximum expression of design today is the process—the activation of open systems, tools that shape society by enabling self-organisation, platforms of collaboration that subvert capitalist competition, and empowering networks of production. The exhibition is heterogeneous, embracing everything from medical innovation to cultural and political criticism, from furniture design to weapons manufacturing.”

Stratigraphic Manufactury 4 – Unfold

A wide range of projects are presented in the exhibition, exploring new directions in contemporary design through artefacts, objects and films. The participants delve into the new territories and opportunities given by open source networked technologies and personal manufacturing tools such as 3D printers. Adhocracy will include several on-site laboratories to catalyse a new London-based centre of micro-manufacturing at LimeWharf.

Adhocracy@LimeWharf has over 50 participants including new projects from: Technology Will Save UsHexayurtFabSkateLuis Fraguada (Robots in Gastronomy) and The Gloves Project.

ASB GlassFloor brings cutting edge technology to TV sport

Interactive sports presentation on the ASB GlassFloor at the BT sport television production facilities in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London

The German producer ASB GlassFloor, located close to Traunstein in Bavaria, is capturing the English market with its interactive sports floor of the future. The illuminated LED marking lines and changing sports fields add a fresh new look to the sports broadcasting of BT Sport in England.

The new TV Channel BT Sport owns the exclusive rights for Rugby, 38 Premier League matches, the German Bundesliga, the WTA Tennis tour, the Moto GP and cover many other international events and sports, paving new paths for interactive presentation.

The studio designers chose the ASB GlassFloor in order to offer a modern and revolutionary presentation for their most important sports. On the 400 sq m sports floor 10 different sports scenarios can be shown at the push of a button: rugby (3 different options), football (3 different options), tennis, volleyball, handball/netball and a square to display a league table. The presenter or director then simply selects the required lines on a touch screen, to show the lines for the interview.

A penalty shoot can be done within true dimensions and situations on the field can be replayed live on the glass floor 1:1; this way the presenter and the guests can judge and explain actions and situations much better to the watching audience. LED marking lines are installed under the elastic ASB GlassFloor and are designed to shine precisely whenever the presenter wants them.

Jamie Hindhaugh, Chief Operating Officer BT Sport states: “What ASB has designed and installed for us is a cutting edge floor which is the cornerstone of our new state-of-the-art production facilities. The floor not only looks fantastic on television but also enables BT Sport to build programmes around observation and analysis bringing its audiences closer to the personalities and skills of the many sports that we will be covering. The floor was designed and installed in record time and there was a great spirit of collaboration and can do from ASB.”

More than 700 metres of marking lines show the required sports under the floor. Horst and Christof Babinsky, the Managing Directors of ASB GlassFloor, say: “The ASB GlassFloor will change the field of sports and events worldwide.”

ASB GlassFloor and its multi-functionality is now taking hold of other markets including spas, hotels, patios and other interior design projects. The colour changing aspects and the ability to install a LED logo under a lit floor hold appeal to a number of projects. The product is low maintenance and takes the wear and tear of footfall very well due to the high quality finish and installation. 

 

Kitchen, Soul, Design: L’Italia che Vive

At the top of City Hall, FederlegnoArredo hosted an evening to celebrate the excellence of Made in Italy kitchens in July, an exclusive event held to present Kitchen, Soul, Design: L’Italia che Vive – a global project to remind the world of Italy’s celebrated tradition of manufacturing excellence.

The Italian Kitchen showcase was launched during the 2013 Milan Furniture Fair, and continued at the distinguished venue, as part of a yearlong journey through the United States, Russia and China and will culminate at Eurocucina 2014 to present the excellence of the Italian Kitchen to leading experts in the industry.

Made in Italy kitchens offer tailor-made solutions that combine traditional know-how with modernity and innovation. The result is crafted, bespoke work with sustainable, yet cutting-edge materials that can accommodate any number of appliances.

World Interiors News attended alongside some Italian greats for a demonstration of the kitchen products: Gianluca Vialli, former Chelsea manager and player; Claudio Silvestrin, Italian architect and designer; and Giorgio Locatelli, the Italian-born Michelin star chef. A dynamic culinary performance was held in a specially designed kitchen to celebrate the essence of Kitchen, Soul, Design: L’Italia che Vive.

During the demonstration their conversation reflected on the excellence of the Italian kitchen; a fusion of traditional manufacturing techniques with soul, emotion and passion. The concept is strong: the kitchen is a place for socialising, as well as cooking, so the bespoke designs of Made in Italy reflect the Italian culture for food and life in the kitchen.

Alongside them, Giovanni Anzani, CEO of Poliform, explained why the Italian Kitchens stands out in contemporary kitchen design: “State-of-the-art technology, combined with skilled craftsmanship that excels on both an aesthetic and a budget level”. He adds: “Quality materials, brilliant engineering, and a flexible and customized approach: this is our toolkit for designing and realizing unique products that define Made in Italy around the world”.

Poliform presented Varenna kitchen furnishings, a contemporary interpretation of the kitchen as a public space whilst remaining in keeping with technical functionality. Poliform create a range of bespoke products such as Varenna to combine traditional Italian craft and knowledge and up-to-date technology to cater towards a variety of design tastes.

Other kitchen products showcased included Arclinea, Dada, Ernestomeda, Scavolini, Snaidero, Valcucine and Veneta Cucine. Gabriele Centazzo, owner of Valcucine explains, “The designer, who is willing to be eco-sustainable, has to realize products must aesthetically survive throughout time”. All the Made in Italy products stressed the importance of sustainability and efficiency in the kitchen: a synthesis of durability, reliability and safety.

The journey of the Italian Kitchen will continue at the Eurocucina Show 2014 to convey all the qualities of “the only room in the house” that truly represents the Italian nature – its soul: a combination of the cutting edge and the traditional.

To engage with the sector even further, FederlegnoArredo is launching an international award, the Kitchen Award 2014, the third element of the programme, to give credit and visibility to creative excellence in the sector.

 

The Surface of Art…

3D SURFACE panels are designed to realize decorative coatings that can create infinite surfaces, without interruption or joints. The Italian company, 3D SURFACE, launched the first collection designed under the artistic direction of Romano Zenoni, composed of 16 textures designed by Jacopo Cecchi, characterized by elements that once applied interact with each other reproducing unique effects. The collection, industrially produced, is varied with 16 different types of decorations. It is possible to choose products that reproduce authentically reality, such as Bamboo, Tenda, Desert, Capitonnè or abstract surfaces, contemporary result of imagination and contemporary artistic trends, like Caos and Millerighe. Trapuntino

3D SURFACE sculpture walls  represent a major innovation in wall coverings, launching an important trend in the world of contract and design. The versatility of use for any space, thanks to the development of two special ceramic materials designed for interior and for outdoor spaces (TRB, TRG),  allows the designer to create every kind of solution.

PIEGA

For installation, the product is simply pasted on the wall and once the joints are plastered surfaces become fluid and continuous. 3D walls are enhanced with light, creating light and shadow effects…and the covered surface  comes alive. 3D SURFACE, as well as proposing a collection of 16 different covering designs, is able to develop  textures on demand, so as to enable every designer to carve their own ideas on walls.
