German lighting designer and manufacturer Ingo Maurer announces the launch of the limited edition of Spyre; a unique luminaire designed by prolific industrial designer and artist Ron Arad.
The concept for the lamp is derived and influenced by a larger Spyre sculpture, which Ron Arad designed for the Annenberg Courtyard as part of the Royal Academy of Arts’ Summer Exhibition 2016.
The original Spyre sculpture is a 16-metre high corten steel oval cone, hiding motors, cogs, and slew-rings. Each segment of the work moves at different speeds, ensuring that the unpredictable acrobatic postures of the installation are never repeated. At the tip of Spyre is a camera, which relays live footage onto to a screen on the façade of the Royal Academy.
Ingo Maurer’s innovative lamp possesses the same kinetic elements. It is made of five segments that can be rotated and adjusted to direct the light. The lamp is fitted with a warm LED technology and an integrated On/Off sensor.
“I am honoured to have been approached by my good friend Ron Arad to translate his iconic design for Spyre into a functional object. Indeed it was a challenge figuring out the technical solutions, but we were very inspired by his unique luminaire design. Working with Ron’s concept, we applied magnetic connections between the five joints to retain movement and versatility in shape”, said Ingo Maurer.
“In the process of developing the Spyre we made some scale models in the studio using magnets in the joints. We soon realized the concept would make great desk lights. I immediately thought of Ingo and knew his expertise and experience with light would be able to realise this vision”, said artist Ron Arad.
The Spyre lamp by Ron Arad for Ingo Maurer is produced as a limited edition of 50 pieces and is available for sale at the Royal Academy shop.
The lamp will also be on display at the Ben Brown Fine Arts Gallery in London, as part of the exhibition: RON ARAD: Summer Exhibition, until 15 Sept 2016.
