The challenge for TETRARC was clear: can they demolish the Mignard skyscraper, stigmatised for its dated 1960s appearance, and replace it with a newer, smaller building with better services and stronger architectural style?

Future projects winner: Beach and Howe, Vancouver, Canada by BIG | Bjarke Ingels Group & DIALOG

This mixed-use residential tower will mark the entry point to downtown Vancouver. The tower reinvents the local typology of a slender tower coupled with a podium, while responding to a difficult site, preserving views and activating the pedestrian realm. The site is three triangular parcels at the north end of the Granville Bridge.

Shortlisted: Connaught Gardens, London, United Kingdom by Pollard Thomas Edwards Architects

These model townhouses appears to consist of two floors from the street, but exploits the sloping site to provide five levels of accommodation. The entrance is at upper ground level, from where you walk through a glazed screen into what becomes, at the back of the house, a first floor living room providing amazing views out over the treetops to Alexandra Palace.

Shortlisted: Luna, Melbourne, Australia - Elenberg Fraser

It has inspired a dedicated fan website, generations of fancy-dress costumes, countless YouTube tribute videos and now a building. That's right; Luna, by Elenberg Fraser, is based on Princess Leia's infamous 'dancing girl' gold bikini, featured in Star Wars, Episode VI: Return of the Jedi.

Shortlisted: HA Tower, Tokyo, Japan - frontofficetokyo

After decades of de-centralisation, living in the centre is becoming popular in Tokyo, and residential towers have begun to populate the city in large numbers. Collectively the additions form a typology that embraces height but unexpectedly denies the surrounding urban landscape in favor of an interior life with minimal outdoor space.

Shortlisted: BONN09, Luxembourg - Rodolphe Mertens Architects

The client being a building contractor specialised in timber construction, the main point of the brief was to provide a first sample on the Luxembourgian scale of a residential building entirely made of wood. The building is located in a medium-density residential area of the city, with traditional buildings from the 30s to the 60s.

Bloc_10 is a multi-family housing project that strives to re-imagine and re-invent the market-driven condominium. On the site of a former gas station in Winnipeg's River Heights neighbourhood, the developer wanted a modestly priced building designed and constructed within 12 months.
