Major design studio secures project through WAN Tender Alerts
Issue No.002 // 23 May 2011
Cultural Centre, Tirana, Albania
Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) has taken first place in an international competition for a 'beacon of religious tolerance' in Albania, working in close collaboration with Martha Schwartz Landscape, Buro Happold, Speirs & Major, Lutzenberger & Lutzenberger, and Global Cultural Asset Management. Comprised of a Mosque, an Islamic Centre, and a Museum of Religious Harmony, the metallic cultural centre looks to bring together individuals from a variety of different backgrounds to educate the community about Islamic values.
The 27,000 sq m complex features a handful of shimmering sculptural volumes interspersed with intimate public courtyards, adorned with all of the plants mentioned within the Quran. BIG had been pointed in the direction of this high profile competition by WAN's Tender Alert Service. Kai-Uwe Bergmann, Associate Partner at BIG said: "Since opening our office in New York recently everyone at BIG can see the true global reach of WAN Tender Alerts as we now follow up leads in Europe, Asia and the Americas."
